Not much is known about the castle that stands on top of the hill between the Rio Maggiore and the Rio Finale river valleys. According to historians, it was built in the second part of the 13th century for defence purposes. In case of attacks from the sea, the inhabitants were hiding here. During the 19th century, it was used as a cemetery. Today, it is a center for conferences, cultural events and weddings. The castle can be easily found if you follow the signs. Although you have to climb a few steps, the wonderful view is definitely worthwhile.
Manarola's castle was probably built in the 13th century. Unfortunately, today, you can only see the remains of the bastion, surrounded by colourful houses.
The round tower of the castle of this Genoan noble family is still an important building in Vernazza. From the Belforte tower, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the village and its colourful harbour. There is another tower higher up, along the walking path leading to Corniglia.
The 16th-century Aurora tower is located by the sea, at the foot of the hill of the Cappuccini. This tower is fortunately in good condition.
The castle, which took the Genoan centuries (from the 12th to the 17th) to build, dominates the town of Portovenere. Several towers of the local defence system are still in good condition. From the castle, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the St. Peter church and the sea.
If you start walking up the hill towards Monterosso, you will find a nice historical area. The castle was built by the Malaspina family in the 11th century then later rebuilt by the Genoan people. For a long time, it served as a prison, today it is a private residence. The Clock Tower dates back to 1265. You can also see the remains of the medieval city walls.
