The hamlet of San Bernardino can be found above Corniglia. It is worth a visit for its tranquility and one of the best views in the Cinque Terre. You can drive or walk up here. (Parking is free.) There is also a local bus service from Corniglia a couple of times a day.
The village is located along a ridge. At one end of the village, you will find the small church of San Bernardino. From the bench near the church, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Corniglia, Manarola and the turquoise Guvano bay. Take some time to relax here, under the huge fig tree.
The village has only a few inhabitants. There is a small bar where local old men play cards, read their newspapers and just enjoy retired life. The bar – which is also a small shop – is run by Signora Franca, who is a very kind lady.
You will see the sign "Basso" in several places, as almost all the families who live here are called Basso. San Bernardino is also named the village of the Basso.
