You haven't seen the Cinque Terre until you have seen it from the sea. The villages look completely different if you are looking at them from the water. The entire coastline is stunning, and there are also beautiful bays hiding between the settlements.
There are several ways to travel along the Cinque Terre coastline by boat. You can just hop on the regular tourist boats that go back and forth between the five villages, La Spezia and Portovenere. It's nice, but will be a crowded experience, especially during the high season.
For a more relaxed experience, check out our sailing trip or the shared Cinque Terre boat tours from Manarola or Monterosso. For more options, please take a look at the different tours on the sea.
But if you'd like to have a completely private adventure, you can do that as well. Spend a few hours or a full day out on the sea with your family and friends, or just the two of you. You could propose to your girlfriend in a nice little boat, celebrate your birthday, wedding or your anniversary this way. Enjoy the breathtaking views, have light lunch and some drinks on board, stop for swimming and snorkeling in the many bays and hidden coves along the coast.
You can rent gozzo boats, rubber boats, motorboats, Ligurian motorboats, fishing boats, motor yachts, luxury yachts or sailboats, with or without skipper. There are smaller boats for rent for 2-10 people, and bigger ones for groups.
Below you can see the boats that I recommended and booked most often during the previous years, along with some beautiful new boats in the selection. Regarding the prices, full day means maximum 6-8 hours, while half day means maximum 4 hours.
Please note that at the moment it is not possible to rent boats without skipper in the Cinque Terre marine protected area. You can rent a motorboat without skipper from Le Grazie and enjoy a wonderful day in the Gulf of Poets, cruising by towns like Portovenere, Lerici and Tellaro, and discovering the amazing bays, caves and rock formations between Lerici and Tellaro, one of my favourite coastlines in the region. Another option is to rent a gozzo boat from Levanto and discover the villages of Bonassola, Framura and Deiva Marina, and the beautiful bays and beaches around them. In case of renting a motorboat without skipper, they do not require a licence, but they do require some experience driving boats.
If you are renting a boat with skipper, please note that every boat has different possibilities for stopping in the villages. Some boats have their own tender boats, others will have to use the local taxi boat to take you to shore, for a small fee. Some companies include this in their prices, others are asking for a supplement. I will clarify all this when I send you the offer, also depending on where you would like to stop.
If you are spending several days in the area, I recommend visiting the villages by train, and rent the boat to enjoy the stunning views from the sea, relaxing, swimming and snorkeling.
Please note that you'll be cruising in the Cinque Terre National Park and Protected Marine Area, so there are certain regulations to keep. At the start you will get a briefing about the possible route and stops.
Let's not forget about the Gulf of La Spezia, Portovenere, Lerici and Tellaro either. Most people want to rent a boat to visit the Cinque Terre villages and they have no idea how beautiful these nearby areas are. If you rent a boat from La Spezia, you can also cruise towards the other side of the gulf and visit Lerici and Tellaro.
Between Lerici and Tellaro there are some picture perfect little bays, when we kayaked around there it felt like being in Thailand. Amazing rock formations, grottos, coves, tiny beaches, turquoise water. Lerici and Tellaro also look pretty from the sea.
If you have more days in the area and the budget, I recommend renting a boat for 2 days. Spend one day in the Cinque Terre and the other day in the Lerici area. If you rent a boat for 2 days, I can offer a discount from the full day price.
You might want to do a day trip by boat from the Cinque Terre to Portofino. That's also possible, but please note that Portofino is quite far by sea, so you will need a fast motorboat or motoryacht, which are more expensive of course. If you are spending a few nights in Portofino and in the Cinque Terre as well, you can also rent a boat and travel from one hotel to the other one by sea instead of taking the train. Surely more scenic. For boat rental from Portofino please visit my boat rental in Portofino page.
The boat tour can take place only in case of suitable weather and sea conditions. The skipper will inform us about the weather and sea conditions one day before the boat rental date. Please make sure we can reach you on the phone number and e-mail address you have provided. If your boat rental needs to be cancelled, we will inform you right away.
In case of cancellation, we will try to organise the rental for another day, if you are still in the area, depending on the availability of the boat. If this is not possible, the boat rental will be cancelled without any penalty. In case of uncertain weather conditions or rough sea along the Cinque Terre coast, the skipper is authorised to sail in the more protected Gulf of Poets, which is also stunning, as I mentioned above.
We suggest to bring with you: camera, a pair of clean shoes to be used on the boat, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen lotion, swimsuit, towel, a light jacket or raincoat, depending on the weather.
If you are interested in renting a boat, please send me an e-mail to info@cinqueterre-travel.com or fill in the boat rental booking form.
Tell me which boat you would like to rent, when, for how long and how many people, and I will check availability for you. Please also let me know which areas you'd like to visit and from which port you'd like to start the boat tour.
For boat rental in other areas of Italy, like Tuscany, Amalfi coast, Sardinia, Puglia or even the French Riviera, please send me an e-mail.
Absolutely a must. We have been going to Cinque Terre for years. We believe in active touring. There is no better way than renting your own boat and touring the cities. The company is accommodating, pleasant and helpful. We will do it again as soon as we return. Don't miss it!!

Working with Tamara and Cinqueterre-Travel was fantastic, easy and an absolute pleasure. They were able to set-up my dream engagement proposal while I was visiting Italy on vacation from Chicago. Tamara was able to find me the perfect boat, captain and assistant so everything was set-up months ahead of time. Even with the large time difference between Europe and the USA, Tamara kept up with constant communication every day so all my questions were answered and everything got set-up perfectly. You will not go wrong using Tamara and Cinqueterre-Travel for your plans. I cannot thank them enough for going above and beyond for my engagement plans.

We had a great trip, the weather was great and the water was just fantastic! Thank you for organising this for us we had a great day.

Your boat rental was an amazing way to explore La Spezia harbour and the Cinque Terra coast. The boat could have done with a little more horsepower but it was a great experience and we all loved the opportunity to explore at our own pace plus swim off the boat in the azure waters of the Mediterranean.

We had an excellent time on our trip, but our highlight was definitely the boat rental. It was by far the best way to enjoy Cinque Terre. The staff were efficient and helpful. Without much boating experience we were quickly on our way. I would absolutely rent the boat again next time I am in Cinque Terre!

From start to finish it was a really great interaction with your company. I thought the price was fair. The boat was very clean and even though Silvano did not speak English (nor us Italian) we had a really great time. He was friendly and kind and pointed out a few things that we could understand. I would gladly book another boat trip again. I also appreciated your input about the time it took to get to the towns and what was realistic. Since we have never been here before that was really helpful.

Tamara, My party could not have been better! It was the PERFECT day. Everyone working on the boat was fantastic. My guests loved everything. Thank you for the birthday cake to celebrate with. What a great surprise treat. I recommended your company to some friends that are there now. I think they hired the boat for a dinner tonight. Thank you for all of your help. I hope to be back there one day.
Tammy (celebrated her birthday party on the wooden fishing motorboat from La Spezia)
Hi Tamara, Everything went perfect! Just perfect. The Skipper was awesome and very friendly. We managed to understand each other though my Italian is close to 0. And at the end of the tour, he took us to a small restaurant, where everything again was just perfect. A good local experience! It was definitely the highlight of our holiday. And probably the last 5 years too. Thank you so much for helping us out! And thank you for the flexibility! Best regards.

Tamara: I am writing to express our family's most most sincere thanks for the arrangement of the Thirty Five Roar. We just arrived back awhile ago and had a fabulous day with Franco as our driver and with Lucila as our companion and first mate, who could not have been nicer and such a sweet personality. They were both beyond delightful. The boat was absolutely perfect. I know we had originally planned for the smaller, but when the Thirty Five arrived, you came to mind and single-handedly became the person who turned our one day tour of the Cinque Terre from what would have been fun to absolutely incredible. The weather is spectacular today. Not too hot and a nice breeze. Blue skies and the water is mesmerizing. The bluest water on earth. We headed straight up to Monterosso, walked through town for 30-40 minutes and then jumped back aboard and headed south to Vernazza. We swam there and took it easy for an hour. We then cruised easily down the coast and swam near Corniglia. We then went past Portovenere (where we are staying) and crossed over near Delado and Lerici and then back to the Grand Hotel Portovenere. We cannot thank you enough. I have a very good friend who rents a house in Cinque Terre every year for a month. Her niece lives there for longer periods of time. They actively promote Cinque Terre to many friends in the US. I am going to HIGHLY recommend that they use your site as the definitive booking site for anyone they talk to in the future. I looked throughout the site just now and there is no way that anyone can have created a more informative and comprehensive collection of information about the area, the villages and offers to arrange any type of activity you could ever want. We are so so grateful. This was our first trip to this area and we are just over the moon about the truly special way we were able to experience this incredible pocket of paradise. We will hold this day dear in our life as a family and it is all thanks to you. All the best and many many thanks again. Most sincerely,
Tom, Stacey, Margaux and Jane (renting the vintage motorboat from Portovenere)
